Have you altered your wine buying habits over the years?
I have, dramatically. I started, as we all do, with cheap bottles of Rhône. But I'm not complaining - I loved, and still love, those rich, masculine wines with big fruit and bigger tannins. But in terms of wines to put away versus wines to drink now? Yeah, I've pretty much done a reverse in trends in the last 12 months.
I'm ashamed to say that in 2009, the vast majority of wines I bought were to be put away until they were ready. Whatever the hell that means. So even though my wine spending shot up, there was still a perpetual shortage of wines at home. I literally did not have wine I could open and drink! That's a problem.
So this year, things are going to be different. We're going back the other way. I'll be actively looking for wines in the $13-18 range, among other things. And as for my purchasing decisions with regards to Bordeaux? Yeah, I'll talk about that another time.
I've cellared all my wine with a friend. If her house gets robbed, I'll be royally fucked like there's no tomorrow.
