Oh Bordeaux. I just can't quit you. I said I'd stop buying En Primeur forever. But I have an ego, like many who write about wine. And nothing strokes the ego like an expensive claret.
In all seriousness, I think it's necessary to have a balanced cellar. That includes wines to lay down for the long term (10+ years). There's few wines in the world meant for that kind of aging - Bordeaux is one of them. The spoofy, overripe oak drinks...not so much. But there still are judiciously made clarets, that I need to search out.
In terms of the wines, Bordeaux still offers fantastic wine experiences, outside of the satisfaction of holding the famous names in your cellar. White Bordeaux is a revelation. And Sauternes ages so beautifully - truly one of the great sweet wines of the world. So I don't think I'm going to quit Bordeaux just yet. And I want 20 years of La Lagune on the wall.DF
