There are lots of trees, plants, and general greens planted in Shanghai. Looks pretty, but I was reminded that these things don't just sprout out of the ground. Strolling around a busy neighbourhood our first week there, I saw these women busy planting the shrubs. I also saw a lot of workers spraying fertilizer all over the city, over plants and grass. One wonders - with such use of chemicals, and its obvious effects on the environment, are these aesthetics worth it, in the long run? Sure it looks nice, but at what cost?

apparently the green city effort plants all clones. isn't that interesting? They're cloning all these rare plants to put everywhere, so anyone can see them. go communism!
