People throw all sorts of stuff in these cauldrons. A sign of piety? The heavy smoke everywhere makes you feel like you're walking in a cloud. I guess the plan is to disorient you, then scare the shit out of you when you enter the temple and suddenly see a looming 30 foot high statue.
