NV Lustau Solera Reserva Escuadrilla Rare Amontillado, DO Jerez
I've been happy with Lustau in the past. With this Amontillado, I wanted to see, and compare with the previous fino sherry. Amontillados begin life as a fino sherry, but without the protective layer of flor yeast - whether due to an act of God, or the producer's intervention - this allows the wine to oxidize in the barrel, giving the wine that amber hue.
Nutty and richer, but retaining that sherry character. Yeah, again, not for me. Interesting, but I'd probably need a huge plate of olives and jamón ibérico to appreciate this.
