2004 Gattinara

2004 Travaglini Gattinara Nebbiolo

2004 Travaglini, DOCG Gattinara

Name, sweet and short, which belies this wine's brilliance. Nebbiolo is my new obsession, and wow, this is getting me excited. Noble wines all around. And Barolo isn't even the only great expression of nebbiolo - Gattinara wines show great character, but in a much friendlier style. Oh yes, this wine was absolutely delicious. Exuberant, earthy red fruits, showing a savoury character and very linear minerality. Elegant, fine texture, spicy finish, good length.

I could do without the gimmicky, oddly shaped bottle. But it's so good, it's making me rethink what I think I know about Italian wines.
